It is conclusive that skeletal muscle is one of the endocrine organs. When we workout intelligently, our muscles produce and secrete myokines that have beneficial effects on other organs. Studies are showing that building muscle not only provides a cascade of hormonal benefits, it also improves metabolism, cognitive function and overall movement. Altogether, these benefits improve our health span.
How often do we need to workout to see benefits? How much protein does it take to build muscle? These answers will vary based on goals, current age, condition, past exercise experience, diet, quality of sleep, stress management skills, etc. We must focus on the fundamentals to have success - good sleep, adequate amounts of quality protein, whole foods and staying hydrated. Once those lifestyle foundations are in place, it's time to lift! First with lighter weights to learn good form with proper breathing then progress to heavier weights, more reps and/or longer time under tension, whether it's to get stronger, build muscle or build endurance.
Let's stop chasing fat and start looking at building muscle as a strategy to healthy aging.
